UO Meditation Skill Guide
Meditation improves your mana regeneration rate and is essential for all caster-based builds. It is a passive skill that works better with meditation-friendly armor.
Meditation is a meditation skill in Ultima Online, rated as Beginner difficulty to train. This guide walks you through everything you need to raise Meditation from 0 to grandmaster, including the most efficient training methods, the targets and items to use at each skill range, and the gains you can expect along the way. Whether you are building your first character or optimizing a finished template, the breakdown below will help you train Meditation as quickly and cheaply as possible.
Below you will find an overview of what Meditation does, a step-by-step training guide, recommended skill ranges, any bonuses Meditation provides, and the templates that pair well with it. If you would rather skip the grind, UO King can deliver a ready-made character or the gear you need to support a Meditation build on your shard.
Meditation governs how quickly a character's mana pool refreshes, making it a cornerstone skill for mages, tamers, and any build that leans on spellcasting. Your total mana regeneration is not driven by Meditation alone; it is the combined result of your Meditation skill, your Focus skill, your Intelligence, and any Mana Regeneration properties on your equipment. A high Meditation score can dramatically shorten the downtime between spells, which is why casters prioritize it early and pair it with meditable (mage-friendly) armor.
Non-meddable armor removes the Meditation bonus. Actively meditating doubles it; grandmaster Meditation adds 10% while passive.
| Skill Range | Training Method |
|---|---|
| 0.0 – 30.0 | Buy from Mage NPC |
| 30.0 – 100.0 | Manually meditate with empty mana pool or cast to drain mana |
0.0 – 30.0
30.0 – 100.0
Several factors feed into your mana regeneration rate, and Meditation ties them together:
- Focus: Adds Focus / 200 mana per second, and also amplifies the bonus you get from Mana Regeneration items.
- Intelligence: Contributes to the Meditation bonus at a rate of 0.0025 per point of Intelligence.
- Grandmaster Multiplier: At GM Meditation or above, your Meditation bonus is multiplied by 1.1.
- Active Meditation: While you are actively meditating, the Meditation bonus doubles.
- Armor Restriction: The Meditation bonus applies only when you are not wearing non-meddable armor, so heavy plate cancels it out.
Mana regeneration is calculated by summing several components. The individual pieces work as follows:
| Component | Value |
|---|---|
| Base Mana Regen Rate | 0.2 mana per second |
| Focus Bonus | Focus / 200 mana per second |
| Meditation Bonus | 0.0075 x Meditation + 0.0025 x Intelligence (x1.1 if GM+, x2 if actively meditating) |
| Base Item Bonus | ((Meditation / 2 + Focus / 4) / 90) x 0.65 + 2.35 |
| Intensity Bonus | Square root of total Mana Regen item intensities, capped at 5.5 (30 total intensity) |
| Final Item Bonus | ((Base Item Bonus x Intensity Bonus) - (Base Item Bonus - 1)) / 10 mana per second |
To find your total, add the Base Mana Regen Rate, the Focus Bonus, and the Final Item Bonus together, then add the Meditation Bonus only if you are not wearing non-meddable armor. As of Publish 46, the Mana Regeneration item property was changed to use diminishing returns and the old hard cap was removed. Every additional point of MR still increases your regeneration, but each successive point contributes less than the last, so stacking MR items yields steadily smaller gains. Higher Meditation and Focus improve the mana you draw from MR items, and both skills now count at intermediate values rather than only at multiples of ten.
